HoCo Man Shot While Selling Cell Phone To Stranger Leads To Prison Sentence

A District Heights man has been sentenced in the fatal shooting of a Columbia man who was privately selling a cell phone.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A 22-year-old District Heights man has been sentenced in the deadly shooting of a Columbia man in 2021.

Quillon Ivan Long, Jr. was found guilty last year by a Howard County Circuit Court jury of first-degree murder, armed robbery and handgun possession charges. On June 11, 2021, Howard County police officers were called to the 10700 block of Hickory Ridge Road for a report of gunshots.

According to the Howard County Police, 22-year-old Montez Case was found in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition and died two days later. An investigation revealed that Case had made arrangements to sell a cell phone online and met Long plus a 15-year-old near a convenience store for the transaction.

Prosecutors said Long and the juvenile, who has been charged as an adult, attempted to rob Case and then shot him. Long has been sentenced to life in prison plus five years.
