Meal Assistance In Howard County Schools Offered Amid Shutdown
The federal government shutdown is affecting families in Howard County, and schools are stepping up with free meal assistance.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Several weeks into the government shutdown, concerns are growing for families struggling to make ends meet. The Howard County Public School System is offering services from counseling to meal assistance to help its students.
"The shutdown of the federal government has caused financial insecurity for so many of our friends and neighbors and undue stress and anxiety on their children," Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano said in a statement. "No child should go hungry and no parent should fear their child will not eat because they cannot afford to pay for meals during this government shutdown period."
Howard County families that have lost pay due to the federal government shutdown can apply for the Free and Reduced-Priced Meals (FARMs) program, and the school system will determine eligibility status within 48 hours. People who may not ordinarily qualify for FARMs may be eligible for the rest of the year because of the loss of income, according to school officials.

Families not receiving FARMs assistance that are negatively affected by the shutdown will be able to pay off meal balances from the government shutdown period through the end of the school year.
"I encourage families to take advantage of the resources available in the county and contact their school principal if they have any additional questions," Martirano said.

Approximately 11 percent of households in Howard County include a federal worker or contractor affected by the federal government shutdown, according to Howard County Executive Calvin Ball.
Last week, Ball announced the county was taking steps to assist residents with everything from water bills to recreation programs during the shutdown.

The shutdown is entering its 19th day on Wednesday, Jan. 9, as President Donald Trump spars with Congress over a Mexico border wall and the federal budget.
For children who are suffering from anxiety or are experiencing fear about their family's financial situation, the Howard County Public School System is also offering services.
Student Services staff at each school can assist students at any time during the school day. There are also mental health resources through the school system and additional supports from the Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services.
