Modern Market Opens In Columbia

COLUMBIA, MD — A new eatery has opened on Old Dobbin Lane in Columbia that serves healthy foods in an airy atmosphere. Modern Market, which began in Colorado about 10 years ago, now has its first location in Howard County.

The concept is to provide healthy, seasonal food that is purchased from farms and suppliers that use practices Modern Market's owners view as sustainable. All food is made from scratch.

Favorites at the restaurant, according to staff, are the curry salmon bowl and truffled potato pizza. Avocado toast, which is on the breakfast menu, is also popular.

Breakfast is served daily until 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and until 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Locally sourced items come from Lyon Bakery in Hyattsville, Compass Coffee in Washington, D.C., and Jailbreak Brewing in Laurel.

Diners at Columbia's Modern Market are surrounded by messages like "eat well be happy," which are sprinkled around the restaurant. There's also local flavor mixed in with the decor; Patch spotted a "Talbott Springs" picture on the wall next to one of the booths, which comes complete with a plant on the table.

There are craft sodas on tap made with cane sugar. Coffee, tea, craft beer and wine are on the menu too.

Modern Market opened on Monday, Feb. 12, between Chipotle and Cava in the shopping center. It's located where Cosi used to be in the Columbia Crossing.

The restaurant is giving away tickets for free meals to celebrate its grand opening.

Modern Market is at 6181 Old Dobbin Lane, Columbia, MD 21045. People can order at the counter or online. Hours are daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
