O's Matt Wieters Visits River Hill High School For Anti Texting and Driving Assembly

As part of AT&T's It Can Wait campaign, students were treated to a visit from the Baltimore All Star, who urged them not to text and drive.

Baltimore Orioles All Star Catcher Matt Wieters visited River Hill High School this morning to deliver an important message: when it comes to texting and driving, It Can Wait.

The visit was in partnership with AT&T’s nationwide It Can Wait campaign against texting while driving. The campaign, which began in 2008, urges drivers – especially teens – not to text and drive through social media campaigns, a ongoing nationwide pledge drive and school assemblies like the one today.

While addressing school’s juniors and seniors, Matt emphasized that no text is worth a life: “There’s not one text message worth the kind of pain and suffering that could happen if something goes wrong.”

River Hill HS was awarded this opportunity by collecting the largest number of pledges among all participating schools in the Baltimore area during the It Can Wait Pledge Drive in the springtime. Students, family, friends and faculty were encouraged to take the pledge to not text and drive.

In addition to hearing from Matt, students got behind a virtual wheel with a driving simulator. Students took turns attempting to drive and text without crashing or breaking any laws.
