PHOTOS: Columbia Townhouse Fire on Thursday

Howard County fire officials said blaze began in end-unit home, then spread.

More than 50 firefighters worked together to put out a blaze in Columbia Thursday that left three homes uninhabitable, according to officials.

Pictures from the fire ground are provided by the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, which reported the situation was more challenging than usual.

“Due to the extreme weather conditions, crews encountered significant challenges while combating the fire,” the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services reported.

“The high winds caused the fire spread to the adjacent home and ignite a discarded Christmas tree,” according to the report.

Howard County was under a wind chill advisory until Friday due to below-freezing temperatures and wind gusts up to 30 mph.
