Police Identify Columbia Man Shot by Officer on Tamar Drive
The man wounded in an officer-involved shooting Monday morning is in serious but stable condition, Howard County police said.
COLUMBIA, MD — A man was in serious condition after a police-involved shooting in Columbia Monday morning that began once authorities were tipped he was planning to kill his family and himself, according to the Howard County Police Department.
James Andrew Schueler, 42, of Columbia, allegedly pointed a pellet gun at police at the corner of Hayshed Lane and Tamar Drive when an officer fired a single shot and hit him in the torso at 8:16 a.m., officials reported.
Schueler was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment and was in serious but stable condition, police said Monday afternoon.

Police became involved with Schueler after a friend of his called 911 at 7:05 a.m. and said he had told her he planned to harm his relatives and himself and referenced suicide by cop, officials reported.
At 7:28 a.m., police located the vehicle described by the caller, a green Jeep Cherokee, and the man inside refused to get out, telling law enforcement that he had a gun and was going to hurt himself, officials reported. He allegedly pointed the gun at his head, police said.

Crisis negotiators were called to the scene, where officers set up a perimeter. Schools in the area, including Long Reach High School and Phelps Luck Elementary School, had been on alert due to the incident.
At 8:16 a.m., he got out of the Jeep and pointed his gun at officers nearby, at which point one officer fired a single shot, hitting Schueler in the torso, police said.
Immediately, police officers trained to provide medical care rendered aid to Schueler, who was taken by medevac to shock trauma.
A weapon recovered at the scene was determined to be a replica pellet gun that police said was identical to a semiautomatic pistol.
Police said all roads that had been closed in the area had reopened by 3 p.m.
