Police: Sobriety Checkpoint in Howard County This Weekend
The Howard County Police Department arrested more than 1,000 impaired drivers last year.

Lights, signs and uniformed officers will greet drivers at a sobriety checkpoint in Howard County this weekend, police announced Tuesday.
The Howard County Police Department said that the checkpoint is one of several conducted throughout the year to promote awareness and reduce drunk and drugged drivers on the roads.
Approximately 27 percent of fatal crashes in Howard County were related to alcohol in 2013, according to police, who arrested 1,165 drivers for driving under the influence that year.

Traffic-related fatalities tend to rise between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, which is also one of the busiest times on roads across the country, according to police, who said traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for Maryland residents.
