Student With Knife Removed From Long Reach Bus: Principal

The student did not try to harm anyone with the paring knife, the Long Reach High School principal said.

COLUMBIA, MD — A student with a knife was taken off a bus from Long Reach High School on Monday, Oct. 9, according to the principal.

Long Reach Principal Joshua Wasilewski sent a note to families Tuesday morning letting them know about the incident, which occurred Monday afternoon.

A staff member had seen a student with a paring knife on Bus 830, which was replacing Bus 714, he said. The driver returned to the school, where the student was taken off the bus without incident.

"At no time did the student try to use the knife," Wasilewski wrote.

Police and Long Reach administrators responded, and the bus was released at 2:40 p.m. to continue on its afternoon route.

The principal asked families to review the school system's code of conduct with students.

Weapons are prohibited on school properties, buses or vehicles on school property. The following are considered weapons, according to the Howard County Public School System's policy: gun; firearm; knife; chemical spray; poison; taser; martial arts weapon; explosive devices; any implement, visible or concealed, possessed under a circumstance that would reasonably lead a person to believe it was a weapon or would be used as a weapon.
