Driver Hospitalized After Car Lands in Pond on Route 100: Officials

The vehicle was nearly submerged when first responders arrived near Executive Park Drive, officials said.

A man was taken to the hospital after his vehicle landed in a retention pond off MD Route 100 Wednesday afternoon in Howard County, according to officials.

At 4:30 p.m., multiple 911 callers reported that a car had left the eastbound portion of Route 100 and was quickly sinking into the retention pond prior to the Executive Park Drive exit, according to a statement from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

When first responders arrived, the car was nearly completely submerged, the statement said.

The driver had gotten out and was standing on the roof as the vehicle continued to sink, according to the statement. Fire authorities told WBAL the driver was a man. Photographs from the scene show a four-door sedan that was involved.

Firefighters put on cold water rescue suits, swam out to the victim and brought the individual to paramedics on shore, according to the report, which said there were no others in the vehicle.

The victim was taken to Howard County General Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the report said. No other injuries were reported, according to the report.

The right lane had been closed on Route 100 during the evening rush hour so authorities could secure the scene and rescue the driver, WJZ reported.

Members of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services Special Operations Team remained in the area to help the towing company remove the vehicle from the retention pond, the department reported.

By 7 p.m., the vehicle had been removed and all fire and rescue personnel had left, according to the report.

Transportation authorities said that by 6:36 p.m., all lanes were open on Route 100 near Executive Park Drive.

At 5:09 p.m., first responders and a towing company were working to remove a vehicle from a pond in the area of Route 100 eastbound and Executive Park Drive, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services reported.

One person was rescued from a vehicle that had overturned in a pond filled with sediment, the department said.

Rescue swimmers brought the one person inside the vehicle to shore, according to the report. He had injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, WBAL reported.

As of 5:30 p.m., the right lane and shoulder on Route 100 east were blocked, according to WJZ.
