Arrest Made in Murder of Clerk at Hanover Exxon Station

A customer found the Glen Burnie man fatally shot in August at the station on Ridge Road. A suspect from Glen Burnie was arrested Friday.

A Glen Burnie man was arrested Friday night for the robbery and murder of the clerk of an Exxon gas station in Hanover on Aug. 7.

The robber grabbed cash and fled on foot, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

A customer of the Exxon station at 7898 Ridge Road called 911 about 1:35 a.m. Thursday to report finding the clerk injured and unconscious. Police and EMS workers who arrived said the victim, Rajinder Kumar, 49, of Glen Burnie, was dead at the scene.Anne Arundel County Police say robbery was the apparent motive in the case.

Since Kumar’s murder, detectives released surveillance video, still images and partnered with the FBI, the Anne Arundel County Muslim Council, and Metro Crime Stoppers to offer a reward of up to $27,000. Detectives and FBI agents sorted through numerous pieces of evidence and followed up on several tips that led to a suspect.

On Friday, Oct. 24, a grand jury indicted Robin Tyrone Smith Jr., 26, of 422 Pamela Road in Glen Burnie, for Kumar’s murder. An arrest warrant was issued charging Smith with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and manslaughter, armed robbery, use of a firearm in a felony, and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

Smith was taken into custody in the Glen Burnie area Friday night without incident, police say. He is currently incarcerated at the Jennifer Road Detention Center on a no-bail status.
