Today I was sitting talking to a client about there nutrition and was reminded of how much mixed information is really out there. It seems that the general public is completely misinformed when it comes to picking the right breakfast cereals to be eating that are healthy. So my client asked me today, "Can I eat Raisin Bran? Is it healthy?" most would say, well yeah, it's made with bran right, so it has to be healthy....not so fast. My client was not so happy to learn that the cereal she loves to eat every morning for breakfast is not only loaded with sugar but the 3 rd ingredient is High Fructose Corn Syrup....YIKES!! No, this really is not so good. You won't see me eating anything that contains that artificial stuff not to mention partially hydrogenated oils either :) I was even further shocked to find out that after a little investigating, even Bran Flakes has HFCS in it! Wow we are lead to believe that these things are healthy and good for us but in reality NOT!
An good alternative would be Kashi Good Friends Cereal Cinna-Rasin Crunch. Now I do have one small problem with the Kashi line of products. They still have evaporated cane juice crystals and brown rice syrup listed several times in the ingredients, meaning aka sugar but at least it is natural.
Better option would be Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Cereal Cinnamon Raisin. This cereal is completely 100% sugar free except for the sugar from the raisins. Now it taste a little like grape nuts but I find that if you add milk (skim, almond, rice) and let it soak, it tastes pretty good.

After this meeting with my client I decided that I am going to the grocery store next week and check out what is going on in the cereal aisle. Stay tuned as I will have the results of my search for healthy good for you cereal next time. Off to Safeway in Gambrills I go.
