Today I am going to share with you a story, something that happened over the weekend. I was working with a client on Saturday, yes I work on the weekends…. I showed up at my clients house and as I was looking over her program to see how she has progressed this week on her own…. to my surprise she didn’t get her workouts in until last night. Now this client was extremely busy this week, time was tight, but she was able to get all her CARDIO sessions in just NOT the weight training.
You might be thinking to yourself…heck atleast she did something, right? Well yes and no. I explained to her that if time is of the essence you are better off putting your energy into a good weight training workout over cardio….YES, you did read that correctly. Weights over Cardio any day!!!
Ok the reason I say this is because most women want to lose weight, right? Yes cardio does help but honestly weights come first. Why? Well the more muscle you have on your body the faster your metabolism burns aka meaning the more calories you burn, which in turn helps you lose body fat. J For every pound of muscle you gain your body burns an extra 50 calories daily…now that may not seem like much but over time this adds up!

Another thing is if you are losing weight you don’t want to look flabby. You want to look toned! The only way to tone the body is by lifting weights and NO, NOT light weights I mean really lift some weight…don’t worry you are not going to get BIG! That is one of the biggest misconceptions out there ladies. Women genetically are not built like men therefore we do not build muscle to the extent that men do. You won’t get big, I promise. So go heavy ladies for 15 reps but make sure you have good form. You should feel a burn in the muscle on your last 4 reps, that would be a good weight to start with.
Back to the story…well my client confessed that it is programmed in her brain to do cardio over weights due to years of dieting and being told that cardio was the way to get the weight off.

Now don’t get me wrong cardio absolutely has its place in losing weight but like I said if your pressed for time your better off lifting weights. Lesson learned. Funny thing is my client said she would rather lift weights than cardio any day…Ditto that!!
