Crofton Meadows Receives National Blue Ribbon Honor

The elementary school is the 12th in the county to receive the distinction.

When Crofton Meadows Elementary was in January, it meant that the school would be considered for national recognition.

On Friday, the school system announced that is the 12th county school to be named a National Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Crofton Meadows is one of 269 schools across the country to be nationally recognized, according to a press release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS).

“We are ecstatic about this recognition,” said Crofton Meadows Principal Derek Burns in a press release. “This award is the ultimate culmination of our 23-year legacy of exceptional teachers and staff, supportive parents, and—most of all—talented students.”

According to the AACPS press release, the criteria for National Blue Ribbon Schools is based on "the ability of schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds to dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; or schools whose students, regardless of background, rank among their state’s highest performing schools on state assessments."

The school celebrated its with an assembly attended by numerous local and state officials in May.

The school will be honored by Secretary Duncan at an awards conference in Washington, DC, on Nov. 12 and 13.
