Crofton Pedestrian May Have Been Drunk When Hit By SUV: Police

A Crofton man may have been under the influence when he walked into the path of an SUV and was killed on Crain Highway, police say.

CROFTON, MD — A Crofton man may have been impaired by alcohol when he walked onto Crain Highway Tuesday night into the path of an oncoming SUV, authorities say. Virgilio Torres Pineda, 53, of the 2400 block of Medford Court in Crofton, died at the scene, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

The accident happened shortly after 10:30 pm. on Crain Highway (MD 3) and Wellfleet Lane in Crofton. Investigators say a 2016 Honda CR-V driven by Jessica Rachelle McPeters, 24, of Bellemeade Trail in Severna Park, was northbound on Crain Highway when Pineda walked directly into the Honda's path. The SUV struck Pineda, who was wearing all dark clothing, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

McPeters was not hurt in the accident.
