Wegmans Recalls Chocolate Easter Bunny Sucker For Peanut Allergy Risk

An Easter candy sold at all Wegmans grocery stores has been recalled because of a peanut allergy threat. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Wegmans Milk Chocolate Big Ear Bunny Sucker was recalled after it was discovered that the peanut-containing product was distributed with the incorrect label.

Landies Candies Co. Inc. of Buffalo, New York, recalled its 3-ounce packages of “Wegmans Milk Chocolate Big Ear Bunny Sucker”, Net Wt 3 oz, Lot # 35016, Best by 9-15-2017 because they may contain undeclared peanuts. Peanuts, an allergen, are not listed on the label. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem, the FDA news release says. The recall was issued March 3.

The recalled sucker was distributed regionally in all Wegmans retail stores. Wegmans has Maryland stores in Columbia, Crofton, Germantown, Abingdon, Hunt Valley and Woodmore near Bowie.

The grocery chain also has more than 90 stores in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

The product is shipped within a carton labeled with an orange label as "Wegmans Swiss Recipe Milk Chocolate Big Ear Bunny Sucker" (3 oz 36 count case). The treat contains a lavender label and reads Wegmans Milk Chocolate Sucker, comes in a 3-ounce, clear plastic flow wrap 6 inches long by 2 inches wide and is marked with an expiration date of 9-15-2017 stamped on the lower left corner.
