Known for years as the “Mayor of Dundalk,” longtime community activist Tom Toporovich suffered two massive heart attacks five days after being admitted to Bayview Medical Center originally for treatment of internal bleeding.

Mr. Toporovich is a mainstay in Dundalk, as well as the entire east side of Baltimore County.

Tom’s philanthropic and volunteer work— which includes over 50 years of working for his beloved community, Dundalk—has been driven by the fact that he lost a brother whose plane was shot down over Europe during World War II.

During those many years, Tom was very active in the Dundalk Optimist Club and used his own money to fund the Police Officer of the Year Award. He was instrumental in running the PAR Fund (Police Assistance and Relief) for the Baltimore County Police Department for many years.

Tom also served as the longtime master of ceremonies for the Heritage Fair, as well as secretary to the county council from 1970 to 1991.

Tom is also known for his generosity to others and said in a phone interview, “I want to get the ‘H’ out of here. I’ve got work to do.” In that quote, he was referring to establishing several 501(c)3 charitable organizations.

Tom may be released from the hospital tomorrow, 12/15/15, pending any further complications. I will keep you updated on any future issues.

Ms. Angell Ball, also a well-known community activist, was instrumental in keeping people posted on Tom’s condition.

I’m quite sure that the entire Dundalk community joins me in wishing Tom a speedy recovery.
