Letter to Governor
I am requesting that you reject the policy of the President to place Syrian refugees in Maryland. The Governors of Alabama and Michigan have already opposed the program and others are preparing to follow suit. I am also sending a request to the Republican Governor’s Association to ask them to formally reject the President’s proposal which would place our party firmly on the side of protecting our people.
Many of these so-called refugees are military age young men. They should be in uniform carrying a weapon and defending their homeland. Even the Arab states, like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and others will not accept the refugees. It has been suggested that safe areas could be created in southern Iraq, managed by the UN and provide a safe refuge for these people.
Representative Peter King, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on terrorism and many other professional experts believe that it is impossible to vet and investigate the backgrounds of the refugees. There are no databases or accurate systems available. All it takes is one mistake and an elementary school’s children and teachers would be massacred. It is clear that the ISIS terrorists are searching for soft targets with a high casualty impact.
It is one thing to be compassionate, but it is altogether something else to be reckless.
As you know, Maryland is a target-rich state. We have a nation’s capital, the Naval Academy, Andrews Air Force Base, NSA, Fort Meade, and even the State Capitol. I am sure ISIS would send its best, brightest, and most radical into Maryland.
President Obama claims that Al Qaeda is on the run and ISIS is being contained. How can we rely on Obama’s promise that the refugees would be a safe investment? By the way, Maryland taxpayers will be paying for this safe investment. The truth of the matter is that ISIS and Al Qaeda are at the height of their powers. ISIS is moving aggressively on an expanded global war of terrorism. America is Ground Zero. Yes, ISIS terrorists are probably already in America and Maryland just waiting for the opportunity to murder our citizens. It has been reported that the first people murdered at the Music Center in Paris were disabled guests. The terrorists were sitting in wheelchairs with them. This is ruthless and indicates the mindset we are dealing with.
This is not the time to be reckless. It is the time to be smart and tough.
Governor, please lead this state and set an example with the other Chief Executives by declaring that Maryland will place the protection of our citizens as its only priority and not accept any refugees.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.
Respectfully yours,
Pat McDonough,
House of Delegates
