Dundalk Shootout: Street Robbery Preceded Gun Battle, Police Say

After an armed robbery in progress was reported, police said a bus stop and gun battle ensued in Dundalk.

DUNDALK, MD — A police officer and a civilian were shot Wednesday and the suspect was killed in Dundalk, police said.

The officer was in serious condition Wednesday evening, while the civilian's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to officials.

Initially, police were dispatched around 2:49 p.m. to an armed street robbery in progress on Dundalk Avenue at Avon Beach Road, where police said a man had tried to rob two people at gunpoint.

The suspect boarded an MTA bus in an attempt to make a getaway but police stopped the vehicle near the Logan Village Shopping Center, in the 3400 block of Dundalk Avenue, officials reported.

Once the bus was stopped, the suspect shot a weapon repeatedly at police and tried to escape; officers exchanged fire with him for an extended period, police said, before he collapsed near the bus from at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A civilian and officer were both shot once and survived.

The officer was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where officials said she was listed in serious condition Wednesday night.

It was unclear whether the civilian, whose injuries were not life-threatening, was a passenger on the MTA bus. She was taken to an area hospital and was expected to survive, officials reported.

The shootout occurred in the area of Belclare Road at Dundalk Avenue.

Police said that body camera footage from the officers and video from the MTA bus would be part of the investigation.

Initial report — A police-involved incident has been reported in Dundalk Wednesday afternoon, officials say.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., the Baltimore County Police Department said that it was at the scene of the incident on Belclare Road at Dundalk Avenue.

Authorities said after 4:30 p.m. that the suspect was deceased.
