14-Year-Old Suffers Chemical Burns at Edgewater Home: Officials

An Edgewater teenager was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital with burns after a homegrown chemical experiment went awry, authorities say.

EDGEWATER, MD — A 14-year-old Edgewater boy is being treated for chemical burns at John Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore after an experiment went awry Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Anne Arundel County firefighters responded to the 4000 block of Waterview Drive around 3:45 p.m. and found a 14-year-old boy with injuries to his face, neck, and both arms. The injuries reportedly happened while the teen was doing an experiment with chemicals, officials said.

The youth was decontaminated before he could be sent to a hospital for treatment.

A Maryland State Police medevac helicopter landed at the American Legion on Mayo Road and flew the teen to the hospital. Fire department officials said the teen's injuries were serious but not believed to be life-threatening.

Members of the fire department Hazardous Materials Response Team went through the house to ensure that any hazards were mitigated.
