2 Sets Of Skeletal Remains From Same Person: Police

2 sets of skeletal remains found in Shady Side last year are likely those of the same woman, Anne Arundel County Police say.

SHADY SIDE, MD — Two groupings of skeletal human remains found in Shady Side in October 2017 are a DNA match, authorities said Wednesday, meaning they're from the same victim. Anne Arundel County Police say the remains recovered a woman in her 20s to age 30. The initial remains were found Oct. 18 in the area of Holly Drive and Chesapeake Drive where they had washed ashore; more remains were discovered Oct. 29 in the 5300 block of Chesapeake Avenue.

The second group of human remains were also found on the shoreline. Investigators believe the remains had been in the water for a long period of time. Authorities said previously that they believe the remains are that of someone who went missing within the past year.

Detectives were notified Thursday that a DNA analysis confirmed the human remains contain the same
DNA profile. Examination of the remains continues in an effort to obtain as many physical descriptors as possible to identify the victim, as well as the cause and manner of death, police said.

When police were initially called for a report of remains found along the shore, a wider search by patrol officers, detectives and members of the Department of Natural Resources recovered additional human skeletal remains. A preliminary assessment by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner shows the remains are those of a Caucasian or Asian woman in her mid-20s to 30 years old, who was about 5-feet 3-inches tall.

Authorities are working with neighboring jurisdictions in an attempt to identify the deceased.
