Changes To 2018-19 Anne Arundel County School Calendar Approved

Anne Arundel County school board members have eliminated three days off from the 2018-2019 school year calendar.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Recommended changes to the 2018-2019 school year calendar — including fewer snow days and parent-teacher conferences — were approved at the Nov. 1 Anne Arundel County school board meeting.

As recommended by a majority of the Calendar Committee, the calendar calls for classes to begin on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, and end on Friday, June 14, 2019. The calendar keeps changes made in the 2017-2018 school year that reduced Easter/Spring Break to three days. It also, requires opening of schools on three additional days to compensate for:

  • Election Day, which falls on November 6, 2018.
  • June 15, 2019, is a Saturday, meaning schools must close no later than June 14, 2019.

To compensate for these three days, the calendar will:

  • Eliminate second marking period Parent-Teacher Conference, leaving conferences in the first and third marking periods
  • Open schools for students on the day of the Maryland State Education Association convention (October 19, 2018)
  • Reduce the number of inclement weather days from three to two, and designate the third inclement weather day as the day following Easter (provided a waiver is obtained from the Maryland State Department of Education)

The board also approved a change that provides teachers with two additional days of professional development prior to the return of students. Teachers will work six days prior to the start of the school year and end their work year one day after students leave.

Board members also gave tentative approval to a 2019-2020 school year calendar. It will take up formal adoption of that calendar next fall.
