LOTHIAN, MD — Police said a Lothian car crash ejected a child and trapped the other two occupants on Monday. Officers noted that all three went to the hospital.

Authorities added that the single-vehicle accident happened around 7:38 p.m. on northbound Southern Maryland Boulevard, also known as Maryland Route 4, just before Talbot Road. Officials mentioned that the driver lost control of her 1996 Honda Accord for an unknown reason, slid sideways out of lane two and crossed lane one. The car hit a utility pole and then a tree before coming to a rest, an incident report explained.

The write-up informed that the ejected child, a 5-year-old boy who was seated behind the driver, suffered serious injuries. The press release indicated that the other child, an 8-year-old girl in the passenger's side of the back seat, was in critical condition. Medics drove both children to Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C., police shared.

Officers wrote that the driver, a 55-year-old woman from Harwood, sustained serious injuries. She went to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, authorities detailed.

Officials think the driver's failure to stay in a single lane caused the crash. The Anne Arundel County Police Department reported that the results of a toxicology test will determine if drugs and/or alcohol were involved. Police stated that they are still investigating.
