Critical Shell Shaking Event Aug. 16 In Shady Side
The community is invited to help clean off oyster shells so that the larvae can properly attach to them and not be washed away.

SHADY SIDE, MD — Marylanders know how important the restoration season is for the oyster population. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation invites the public to help prepare oyster shells for the upcoming season by shaking shells.
Shell shaking involves cleaning oyster shells by shaking the dirt and debris off of them so that baby oysters can grow on them. According to the CBF, this is a critical step in the oyster restoration process because without cleaning those shells, millions of healthy larvae would instead attach to the debris and not the shell, causing them to be washed away into the silt.
Anyone interested in helping should wear closed-toe shoes and bring along a water bottle. Participants younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The shell shaking will be held at the Oyster Restoration Center, 4800 Atwell Rd., in Shady Side Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
