Dennis Laird Boatman, 76, of Texas and Formerly Edgewater

Dennis Laird Boatman, a 14-year resident of Laguna Vista, TX, and previously of Edgewater for 45 years, died on Saturday, Aug. 29. He was 76.

Born Sept. 22, 1938, in Washington, D.C., to the late Raymond and Margaret Boatman, he worked for the District of Columbia Fire Department from May 22, 1960 to October 24, 1997; retiring as the deputy fire chief. Dennis served in the U.S. Army from 1956-62. He was a member of the Emerald Society, American Legion, Elks Lodge, Knights of Pythias and the Moose Lodge. Dennis enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming and history.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Helen Boatman; his former wife, Marie Prielipp, and their children, Mark L. Boatman, Patricia A. Arnn, James R. Boatman, Matthew A. Boatman, Deborah L. Bowers; two stepchildren, Jay Hudson and Traci Hudson; six grandchildren, Joseph Sullivan and Melissa Oppliger; Timothy and Theresa Boatman, Randall and Aaron Bowers, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Katherine M. Boatman.

A memorial gathering will be held at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater, on Friday, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to noon, with his memorial service beginning at noon. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation, P.O. Box 4565, Washington, DC 20017.
