Edgewater Blaze Displaces 2, Hospitalizes Occupant And Firefighter: Officials

EDGEWATER, MD — An Edgewater house fire displaced two residents Wednesday morning, officials announced. A spokesperson said the blaze also hospitalized an occupant and a firefighter while causing $75,000 in damage.

The fire started around 3:09 a.m. in the 200 block of Beverley Avenue. Occupants and neighbors reported the flames, which started in the second-floor bedroom. First responders found the two-story, single-family home with fire coming from a front window on the top level.

A team of 40 controlled the flames in 20 minutes. The groups also found a 51-year-old male occupant with burned hands and feet as well as symptoms of smoke inhalation.

Maryland State Police medics flew the victim by helicopter to the burn team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the District of Columbia. Officials think his wounds are serious, but they expect him to survive.

The injured firefighter sustained minor burn injuries. Paramedics drove him to the burn unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. They did not find any functioning smoke alarms, however.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents with housing.
