Edgewater Residents Continue to Oppose School Redistricting

Edgewater residents attend town hall meeting and Board of Education meeting on the same night

Approximately 70 Edgewater residents attended a Town Hall meeting at Edgewater Elementary school Wednesday night with Scott Schuler, Student Demographics and Planning Specialist at Anne Arundel County Public Schools to learn about the thought processes and rules behind redistricting.

Approximately 24 of those residents traveled directly from the Town Hall to the Anne Arundel County Board of Education meeting already in progress to participate in the ongoing discussion about redistricting.

At the Board of Education meeting, Jessica Packler, a parent of students at Eastport Elementary School, gave a passionate speech saying, “the Annapolis cluster hasn’t been redistricted in 20 years.” She also noted the overcrowding in Tyler Heights and stated that, “redistricting can’t wait for Tyler Heights to be rebuilt. Redistricting can’t wait another year.”

But she conceded that it would be perfectly acceptable to take Edgewater students out of the equation, leading to cheers from the Edgewater crowd.

The question has been asked at least 3 meetings, “why include Edgewater (in the redistricting of the Annapolis cluster)?” One is the oft repeated “natural boundaries” directive which purports that the students of Edgewater who cross the South River on their way to their currently-districted schools are problematic for the county.
