Most hosts avoid talking politics or religion at a gathering to preserve social harmony.

There’s another topic to stay away from this holiday: should local businesses be open on Thanksgiving?

Last week Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch posed that question to our Facebook friends. Nearly 600 people read or commented on the post. And a few readers chimed in with their thoughts about the Christmas creep.

The prevailing opinion might best be summarized by Kathleen Phillips Wert: “No. Period.”

A reader said shops should be closed to give workers family time, but one commenter asked why so many consumers swarm the stores if most readers say Thanksgiving should not be a work day.

Bruce Potter said, ”I think that local businesses should be closed on Thanksgiving to allow the employees to spend the day with their families. If they want to stay open, I suggest that the owners go in and run their business for the day.”

Which drew this response from Keith Phelps: “If everyone thinks they should be closed then why do you all flock to the stores.”
