Edgewater Woman Burned Trying to Rescue Pets from House Fire

An Edgewater family is without a home after a kitchen fire caused $60,000 damage; a woman was burned trying to get to the family pets.

EDGEWATER, MD — A woman suffered serious burns when she went into her burning Edgewater home in an attempt to find her family pets, which were inside, fire officials say.

Anne Arundel County firefighters were called to the kitchen fire in a house in the 1500 block of Wakefield Road about 10:15 a.m. Friday. Flames were shooting through the roof of the one-story home when firefighters arrived.

According to the fire department, the family returned home and found a fire in the kitchen. Forty-five firefighters brought the fire under control in about 10 minutes.

A 36-year-old woman was taken by paramedics to Anne Arundel Medical Center with serious injuries after trying to find her pets and was expected to be transferred to the Burn Center at John Hopkins Bayview. No update on her condition is available, fire officials said Monday.

Members of the Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit have determined the fire was accidental, and was caused by a stove that was left on. Damage to the home is estimated at $60,000.

Two adults and two children have been displaced by the fire damage. Firefighters searched the home and were able to locate one family pet and return it to the family uninjured. The second pet was not found in the house and firefighters assume it escaped the blaze.
