Firework Explosion Severely Injures Tilghman Island Man

A firework blew up in a Tilghman Island man's hand Saturday, severely injuring his hand, the state fire marshal's office says.

TILGHMAN ISLAND, MD — A Talbot County man suffered a severe injury to his hand when a firework blew up Saturday while he was holding it, the state fire marshal's office says. Michael S. Malcolm, of the 5800 block of Tilghman Beach Drive in Tilghman was hurt in the incident about 10 p.m. near his home.

Authorities say a child found an unknown type of suspected illegal explosive/firework and gave it to his neighbor, Malcolm, who subsequently ignited the device. The firework detonated while Malcolm was still holding the device in his hand. The injury is serious but not life threatening.

Talbot County EMS initially treated the victim before he was flown to the Union Memorial Hand Center by Maryland State Police helicopter.
