Frances Jane Berry, 71, a 47-year resident of Edgewater, died on Wednesday, April 22, at her residence after battling cancer for two years. Born on March 25, 1944 in Washington, D.C., to the late Arthur and Mary German Madison.

Frances graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1962 and earned an A.A. degree from Anne Arundel Community College in 1988. From 1982-84 she worked at the Riverdale Baptist School as a teacher’s aide, she also was an addictions counselor, bookkeeper, cheerleading coach, certified herbalist, and Doctor of Naturopathy.

Frances was a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater, where she was a member of the choir and Bible study. She was also involved in the pre-marital counseling program and the church garden. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, walking and being with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Frances was also preceded in death by her sisters, Dolly Bradshaw and Dianne Morris, and brother, Clifton Madison.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Berry, whom she married on December 1, 1989; children, Joseph Scalley, III of Edgewater, John Scalley of Severna Park, Susan Herrold of Annapolis and Michelle Miller of Frederick; sisters, Betty Jo Dent of Ocala, FL, Alice MacNamara of Annapolis and Grayce Madison of Virginia; granddaughters, Holly Denick, Kinsey Herrold, Michelle Figgins, Mary, Madison and Kendall Scalley; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to celebrate Frances’ life on Monday, April 27, from 9 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial begins at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road in Edgewater. A reception follows immediately in the church hall. Entombment will follow at the Lakemont Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Davidsonville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church at the address above.
