Edgewater, MD — An online fund has been established for the children of an Edgewater man who drowned in a South River boating accident.
Joseph Rossi, 47, of Edgewater, reportedly jumped off his boat Saturday to retrieve a hat and never resurfaced, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. His body was located Sunday, more than 12 hours after he had fallen overboard, according to authorities.
The accident happened in the area of the South River near Shelby Bay.

When he dove into the water, Rossi hadn't put the 25-foot boat in neutral, and his ex-wife Christie Rossi had no boating experience. She was unable to stop the from moving, Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson told the Capital-Gazette.
Two people on a nearby boat saw Christie Rossi waving for help, caught up with the boat, and one of them boarded the vessel to stop it while calling 911.

Family members have established a scholarship fund for Rossi’s children, Matteo and Siena, on the GoFundMe website.
The site says that the family was out on the water to celebrate Rossi’s birthday.
His sister, Maria Nordgren, said on the website:
“Joe was an adventurous, fun-loving and spirited guy who enjoyed running with his daughter, scouting with his son and cruising with his family in his classic ’68 Impala. He lived for the moment and made each one count. While his biggest fans were Siena & Matteo, he also loved rooting for the Yankees and the Patriots. He was always there for anyone in need and with everyone he touched he made a friend.
What we can do is help start a Scholarship fund in support of his beautiful twin babies, Siena and Matteo. We have set up this fund for those who have inquired about giving towards the financial needs they will be facing in the future. The money raised will be placed into a trust for their future education.”
