Lothian Native Celebrates Her 100th Birthday
Sarah Elizabeth Evans rang in her birthday Jan. 21 with a big party at Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Crownsville.
CROWNSVILLE, MD — One of the area's oldest residents recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Sarah Elizabeth Evans rang in her birthday Jan. 21 with a big party at Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born Sarah Watkins in 1920, her mother was a Cherokee Native American and her father a former indentured servant. She was one of 24 children and is the last living Watkins from her immediate family. She grew up in Lothian on a corn and tobacco farm, and because there were so many siblings, they formed their own baseball team.
Relatives traveled from across the country to celebrate with Evans. She donned a pink tiara, a hot pink dress and matching shoes, all in shades of her favorite color.
