Man Jailed for Trying to Strangle Woman: Police

A Shady Side man is charged with assault for reportedly trying to strangle a woman who was out with her child.

A Shady Side man who may have been high on drugs is charged with trying to strangle a woman, according to Annapolis Police.

Officers responded for a report of an assault and met with a woman who reported that she was just assaulted by.

The woman told police she was outside with her child Tuesday morning when an acquaintance, Carl Smith, 31, of Shady Side walked over to her. Police say Smith put both hands around the woman’s neck, and started strangling her. The victim pushed Smith to the ground and was able to break his grip and get away. Her neck was red and sore.

Police found and arrested Smith in the 200 block of Croll Drive. Authorities say he showed signs of being under the influence of an illegal drug.

Smith was charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. He is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center on $20,000 bond.
