Memorial Day 2017: Parade, Plus What's Open, Closed In Anne Arundel County

While county office and schools are closed for Memorial Day, Mayo Beach is open. And Annapolis has its annual parade planned.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — The Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 29, means county office are closed in observance of the holiday, along with all Anne Arundel County Public Schools and central offices and county libraries.

To celebrate the holiday, the Annapolis Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 29, at 10 a.m. The parade follows the traditional route on West Street. It goes around Church Circle, down Main Street, and ends at City Dock. Marching bands, as well as veteran, community, and patriotic organizations will be part of the parade honoring and remembering those who have died serving our country.

Immediately following the parade will be the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Susan Campbell Park. This ceremony is open to the public.

County Trash Collection Changes

Changes to curbside collection schedule and hours at the Millersville Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility and the Northern, Central and Southern Recycling Centers are planned because of Memorial Day.

  • May 29 - NO curbside collection, Waste Management Services facilities closed
  • May 30 - Curbside collection provided to Monday customers and facilities open
  • May 31 - Curbside collection provided to Tuesday customers and facilities open

Collections normally scheduled for Monday will occur on Tuesday, and collections normally scheduled for Tuesday will occur on Wednesday. All facilities will reopen on Tuesday, May 30.

Mayo Beach is Open

Mayo Beach Park, 4150 Honeysuckle Drive in Edgewater, will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Memorial Day. This event is free and open to the general public. Bring your kids and your grandkids and a picnic and enjoy this county-owned public beach.

This county-owned public park is only rarely open to the general public. Mayo Beach has wide sand beaches, a bath house, a playground, a softball field, parking for hundreds of cars and a pavilion that is usually rented out for weddings. Bring your canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard and launch from the beach. Bring your binoculars and find the birds that live in the huge tidal pond behind the park.

No alcohol and please leash your dog.
