Mindfulness and the Emotional Art of Teaching: Revitalizing Teaching and Learning

Zelma Wynn Symposium - a symposium focusing on mindfulness in the classroom

Saturday, October 17th
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
The Summit School

Presented by Dr. Patricia Jennings, M.Ed., Ph.D.

At its core, teaching is an emotional practice. The social and emotional dynamics of the classroom play a key role in promoting student learning and fostering prosocial behavior. Drawing upon basic and applied research in the fields of neuroscience, psychology and education, this symposium will provide valuable information about how mindfulness-based approaches can help teachers manage the stressful demands of the classroom, cultivate an exceptional learning environment, and revitalize teaching and learning. This information is applicable for both traditional learners and for those who learn differently.

Participants will learn mindful awareness practices for managing stress and promoting wellbeing; the effects of mindfulness on brain functioning and emotion regulation; and how to introduce mindfulness-based practices to provide social, emotional and learning support. The results of cutting-edge research on mindfulness in education will be reviewed.
