New County Law Aims To Protect Pets

County executive calls it "a huge step in protecting animals from neglect."

Pet owners in Anne Arundel County will be required to make sure their cats or dogs don’t go hungry or thirsty, under a new law passed this week by the County Council.

On a 6-1 vote, the council approved animal protection legislation proposed by County Executive Steve Schuh. It requires the owners of animals to make food and water available at all times to prevent dehydration and possible death, especially in extreme conditions.

“Last night we took a huge step in protecting animals from neglect,” Schuh said in a news release posted Tuesday on the county’s Facebook page. “This legislation reaffirms our commitment to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our pets and other animals in the county.”
