The National Aquarium works with select schools to raise sea grasses. Towards the end of the year, the students get to plant their grass, mainly Spartina alterniflora, at restoration sites throughout the greater Chesapeake Bay area. Luckily for us, St. Andrews United Methodist Day School participates in this program and is located within our watershed! The South River Federation has worked with St. Andrews on numerous other occasions so when we got the call from the National Aquarium about the opportunity to partner with both organizations, we couldn’t refuse!
The call was perfect timing because the Federation was involved in a living shoreline project near Arundel on the Bay that needed to be planted. On a nice spring morning in early May, the National Aquarium conservation team, over 40 students from St. Andrews, and Federation staff worked together to plant 2,400 Spartina alterniflora that the students had raised. The students did a great job! It is always so nice to see them have so much fun outdoors. In little over an hour, all of the 2,400 grasses were planted. The shoreline looks great and we look forward to watching it flourish over the years. Thank you National Aquarium of Baltimore and St. Andrews UM Day School for helping us make our watershed a better place!
