Serious Accident at Mayo Road-214 Intersection Friday Night

Crash happened as fans left last home basketball game of the year.

A motor vehicle accident involving two cars happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 11) as students and others left the parking lot at South River High School following evening activities.

Witnesses said that a silver four-door sedan was traveling west on 214 (Central Avenue) at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light and crashed into a white van that was proceeding (on green) through the intersection. The force of the crash broke ladder racks off the van and sent several extension ladders into the roadway.

There were hundreds of cars in the high school parking lot attempting to exit because of several activities at the high school on Friday night, including the final varsity home basketball games of the year (against south county rival Southern High), a play, and "game night" at CAT-South.
