Always let the activity of the room dictate the furniture arrangement. In a space where you entertain, create conversation areas where you can sit and chat. Often people just plunk down a large sofa in the room. We find it unusual for three people to sit side by side on a sofa and turn their heads to talk. Chairs are better, if you love to entertain!
