Shady Side Students Recognized for Bay Fundraising Efforts

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-5th District) thanked Shady Side fifth-graders who raised $1,611 for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Shady Side fifth-graders walked across the street to Discovery Village on Monday afternoon to present a check worth $1,611 to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).

The students created and sold Chesapeake Bay-themed postcards to raise money for the CBF and were recognized by U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-5th District) for their efforts Monday afternoon along the water.

After participating in an oyster restoration project at Discovery Village earlier this year, Molly Tremel’s fifth-grade class decided they wanted to do more to help the bay. So they and sold the cards to raise a total of $1,611.

“Nothing makes me so happy than to come and accept a check for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. You are our heroes for what you have done,” said CBF president Will Baker.

Hoyer also spoke to the students to thank them for their hard work. Hoyer told the kids that next year, when they are young sixth-graders entering middle school, they could tell the other students that they created a business plan to raise more than $1,000 for the bay—a more than impressive feat.

Hoyer also graciously thanked Tremel for her work as a teacher, and for educating her students on the value of the Chesapeake Bay.

Tremel said she just hoped her students learned that they can take a stand on something, and be supported in their effort.

“I think the students have such an appreciation for starting a project and seeing it come full circle,” Tremel said. “The kids have seen that they can make a difference and people are here to support them…Hopefully they will continue with that their whole lives.”
