Smithsonian Lecture: Wetlands vs. Rising Seas

How Bay wetlands fight climate change, and why their survival is critical to ours.

Learn about the natural world straight from the scientists every third Tuesday of the month, at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater. This month, Pat Megonigal will explore how coastal wetlands are battling sea-level rise, and how our actions can help or hinder their survival.

Time: 7pm, with light refreshments at 6:30
Place: Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Schmidt Conference Center
647 Contees Wharf Road
Edgewater, MD 21037

Talk Summary: Coastal wetlands protect our homes and help keep our waters clean. They also have fascinating abilities to build elevation in the face of sea-level rise. But it’s unclear if the host of global changes will help or hijack the systems that keep them afloat. Pat Megonigal will summarize three decades of research into how wetlands are responding to climate change, and how our actions are shaping their future.
