South River Sports: Week of Jan. 10

The wrestling team is undefeated in the county. This week they'll meet Southern at home.

The athletes stay busy with sporting events both at the school and at venues around the county. Here's a look at where things stand in the rankings and when and where the teams will be playing this week.

Basketball

The girls varsity team (7-2) will have two away games this week. On Tuesday, they'll head to Glen Burnie for a 7 p.m. game against North County. On Thursday, they'll be at Arundel at 5 p.m. This past week was a tough one for South River, playing two teams ranked slightly above the Seahawks in the division: Meade High School and Broadneck High School. They fell to Meade, 85-65, but won against undefeated Broadneck, 51-34.

The boys varsity team (3-7) couldn't find the magic they needed to topple Meade (65-46) on Tuesday, but they came close in their game against Broadneck (45-43) on Thursday. They will face North County, away, on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Arundel (9-2), also away, on Thursday at 7 p.m. Arundel is ranked seventh in the division, which will be a tough one of the Seahawks.

The girls junior varsity team (6-1) will host North County on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. On Friday the 13th, they'll be play Arundel, away, at 3:30 p.m.

Indoor Track

Almost all of the Seahawks' meets this season will be held at the Prince George's County Sports Complex (PGCSC) in Landover. There is a meet Sunday against Baltimore. The fun starts at 3:30 p.m.

Swimming

Swimming started its season on Dec. 16 with a win for the Seahawks at the Naval Academy Aquatic Center in Annapolis. Their weekly meets at the Arundel Swim Center began Jan. 7 and will continue until the county championship meet on Feb. 3. At the Jan. 7 meet, Michael Seaberg broke the school record in the 100 butterfly. The "Poolhawks" won the meet against Arundel and Glen Burnie.

Wrestling

One of the big matches of the year will take place this coming week when Southern High comes to Edgewater for a meet. This year's rivals match will take place on Friday the 13th. That" unlucky" day shouldn't be a worry for the Seahawks, who have 15 wins and two losses this season. On Tuesday, they'll meet Northern, also at home at 5 p.m.
