South River Sports: Week of Jan. 3

The Seahawks are back in action starting Tuesday.

The wrestling team is undefeated so far this season in county play, but will be heading into potentially dangerous territory with a meet against the Northern High Patriots (4-1) of Owings in Calvert County. The girls varsity basketball team, ranked eighth in the division by MaxPreps, will head into a Thursday matchup at home against Broadneck, ranked seventh. Here's a preview of this week's games and meets for varsity sports.

Basketball

The girls varsity team (6-1) will play Meade High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at home. At 5 p.m. on Thursday, they'll have a tougher game at home when they face Broadneck (4-0), the only girls basketball team ranked above the Seahawks in county play, according to MaxPreps. However, over the holiday break, Broadneck came up short in a non-conference tournament matchup against St. Mary's Ryken. Also in late December, the Lady Seahawks had two non-conference games—and won both. Expect an exciting game on Thursday.

The boys varsity team (1-5) had mixed results with their holiday tournaments, winning one and losing the other. The boys, 3-5 in county play, will host the Meade Mustangs (5-3) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. On Thursday, they face Broadneck (4-3) at 7 p.m. at home.

Almost all of the Seahawks' meets this season will be held at the Prince George's County Sports Complex (PGCSC) in Landover. The Indoor Track team had no meets over the holiday break. They will participate in a meet at the PGCSC Wednesday against athletes from Howard County starting at 3:30 p.m.

Swimming

Swimming started its season on Dec. 16 with a win for the Seahawks at the Naval Academy Aquatic Center in Annapolis. The next meet is Saturday at the Arundel Swim Center in Riva at 3 p.m. They will have meets once a week, until the county championship meet on Feb. 3.

Wrestling

Seahawks wrestlers' 14-2 record is an impressive set of numbers to take into Tuesday night's away meet at Northern High School in Owings. Northern's in-county record, according to MaxPreps, is 4-1, while South River is undefeated in the county (8-0). The Seahawks will be back home at 4 p.m. on Friday for the South River Invitational, a two-day meet that continues Saturday morning (9 a.m.) in the gym at South River High in Edgewater.
