Summit's Executive Director Elected ASHA Fellow

Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy, Executive Director of The Summit School, has been elected a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Dr. Mele-McCarthy received this lifetime award at a ceremony during the ASHA annual convention in Chicago on November 15, 2013. 

Nominees are sponsored by fellow ASHA members and must demonstrate outstanding professional contributions to the field in three out of six performance areas. This is one of the highest honors granted by ASHA. ASHA Fellows exemplify the foundation of professional achievement for the association.

Dr. Mele-McCarthy, CCC-SLP serves as Executive Director and Head of School for The Summit School and is an expert in the field of learning disabilities, as well as speech and language. She holds Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Arts degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Adelphi University. She has been a college professor, clinician, consultant, and diagnostician. Dr. Mele-McCarthy graduated Leadership Maryland Class of 2012 and earned The Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award. In 2006, she earned the coveted Rolland J.Van Hattum Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation for her significant contribution to the field.
