Thomas James “Tommy” McFarland III, a 42-year resident of Annapolis and Davidsonville, MD, died October 6 at his home after battling pancreatic cancer for more than 6 years. He was 52.
Born on August 16, 1962 in Maryland to Joan Carol Spicer and the late Thomas James McFarland, Tommy graduated from South River High School and served in the U.S. Marines. Following his military service, Tommy worked in the Uniform Division of the U.S. Secret Service, then as a sergeant for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
He was a member of FOP Lodge 70 and the Riva Trace Baptist Church. Tommy enjoyed attending his daughter’s sports activities, hunting, fishing and participating in Civil War re-enactments.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mara McFarland; two children, Maija McFarland and William McFarland, both of Annapolis; his mother, Joan McFarland of Davidsonville and one sister, Karen Mackey and her husband, Kevin of Arnold.
Friends are invited to Tommy’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 10, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 11 at Riva Trace Baptist Church, 475 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Please make checks payable to Johns Hopkins University.
