The 2022 Freightliner HX620 trash truck was making its scheduled collections on eastbound Broadwater Road when it approached a dual-rear-wheel pickup truck heading west, police said. This part of the road is narrow and has no shoulders.

Officers said the two wide-bodied vehicles tried to safely pass each other, but the two right wheels of the trash truck fell off the roadway's edge and sank in the mud.

The trash truck then tipped over and rolled onto its right side, authorities said.

There were two trash collectors riding on the back of the truck. One safely jumped off the truck and was not hurt. Police said the other worker could not escape and was pinned beneath the overturned truck.

Medics pronounced that worker dead on the scene, officers said. Officials took the victim's body to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, which will determine the exact cause of death.

The pickup truck and the trash truck did not collide. Authorities said Bates Trucking Co. Inc of Bladensburg owns the trash truck. The driver of the trash truck was not hurt.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is still investigating.
