Where Have All The Bookstores Gone?

Not only is it a song (kinda), it’s a good question! Where have they all gone? I basically grew up in a bookstore and now we have only one. Well, sit right back and hold onto your seats because we’ve got another one coming to town!

There’s truly nothing like the experience of holding a real book. You can look at the cover and appreciate the artwork. You can feel the weight in your hands. I just read the book “On The Blue Comet” and it felt like a good, solid book and it was a good, solid story! You can flip through the pages and look at the print. That can make a huge difference. Some people don’t like the smaller print while some prefer it. Sometimes there can be pictures like in the book I’m reading at the moment “The Graveyard Book”. There’s nothing wrong with Kindles and Nooks. In fact, I have one too and I enjoy it, but a book in the hand is worth 2 ereaders on the store shelf! I always have this fear of my Kindle running out of power or getting sandy or someone dropping it. I’ve never had this fear with a book. No, I’d rather have a book, but even getting a physical hold on one of those can be tricky. The library is always there for me when I need them thankfully, but there are those moments when I’d like to purchase a book. Once again I’m directed back to the virtual world. I love Amazon and their prices can’t be beat, but I can’t touch the books and that is where an old fashioned bookstore will always have an edge up on technology. This is also why I was so excited to hear about a new book store popping up on the peninsula!

Edgewater Books at this very moment is getting ready to open it’s doors August 19th! They’re painting their walls and stocking their shelves and getting ready to open their doors to the public. Edgewater Books understands that books are so much more than words on a page. Books take us on journeys to the center of the earth or distant places in a magic treehouse. We can read the words of a 19 year-old girl from the the 1800’s in “Frankenstein” and see through the eyes of a lost toy in “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane”. Everyone has a favorite that brings them to moments of happiness in their lives. My son’s favorite was “Where The Wild Things Are”. Although I lost my copy long ago, “Turtles Turn Up On Tuesday” still brings a smile to my face.

The doors will be open to everyone to listen to a story or to help find a special book. Edgewater Books is about community. It’s about family. It’s about the love of reading. And it’s coming soon!
