EDGEWATER, MD — A retired school employee from Galesville could not believe her luck when she bought a Gold Rush X50 scratch ticket at South River Liquors in Edgewater. Barbara Rowland loves to try her hand at Maryland Lottery scratch tickets, but this time, instead of feeling deflated with a near-win, she hit it big.

Rowland was in town checking on her elderly father and he loves scratch tickets, too. So Rowland popped by the store to grab them both some.

“My dad’s a Lottery player, so I asked if he wanted me to bring him a ticket. He did, and he asked me to get a $10 ticket for myself while I was there,” Rowland told the Maryland Lottery. “I play, too, and have had some luck with the Gold Rush games, so that’s what I picked.”

Rowland hopped back into her car and began working on her ticket. She was shocked when she realized that the match she had uncovered meant she just won $50,000.

“I was so excited. I called my husband and he cautioned me to quickly check the ticket with my lottery app," she said.

Rowland then confirmed her ticket was a winner with the app and the cashier inside the store. She was in disbelief. She then returned to her dad's house to tell him the big news.

“I was nervous about telling him, about his heart, but he handled it fine. He was thrilled for me," Rowland said.

The 63-year-old and her husband plan to share their winnings with family and focus on a few home improvement projects. Their $50,000 win is the fourth second-tier prize claimed since the game’s May debut. Gold Rush X50 still has five $100,000 top prizes available.
