Bottle of Compressed Air Explodes in Sykesville

A can of compressed air exploded Wednesday when the public works crew picked up trash in Sykesville.

A bottle of compressed air exploded "20 feet out of the back" of a trash truck when public works crews were picking up garbage Wednesday, town officials say.

"There was an incident this morning when our public works crew picked up one of the trash bags unknowingly containing three bottles of compressed air," read a Town of Sykesville press release.

"When the arm of the trash truck came down to push the trash into the truck it hit one of the bottles and it exploded 20 feet out of the back of the truck."

There were no injuries reported.

Town officials reminded residents not to place compressed air, propane or any other explosive bottled or canned substance in the trash.

Individuals looking to dispose of canned or compressed air are urged to contact the Carroll County Landfill at (410) 386-4550 and inquire when hazardous materials are accepted for disposal.
