Many of our schools have planned
special activities to honor our veterans and make students aware of their
service and sacrifice for our country. Some of these activities are listed below:

Francis Scott Key High Schoolwill hold a veterans breakfast on Wednesday, November 10 from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m.

School students and staff will honor past and present veterans in their lives on the school’s Wall of Honor.

Manchester Elementary School
will be sending home recognition slips that families can fill out with any
veterans that they would like recognized in a display on the front hallway
bulletin board. They also will be providing some tokens of appreciation to the
local American Legion.

Mt. Airy Elementary School
Mt. Airy Middle School is recognizing and honoring those that have served and are still serving in the military by collecting photographs to be displayed throughout the school and having TAPS performed by students for the entire school. In social studies classes, students are interviewing service men and women and the video will be shared with parents and students. On the morning show, students are interviewing peers and asking, “What Does Veterans Day Mean to You?”.

North Carroll Middle School is creating a video with pictures that families submit of veterans and current military family members. The video will be shown during FLEX and sent to families to watch.

Northwest Middle School is collecting photographs of veterans and active service men and women for the lobby display. Students will view a video during Husky Half to honor and thank our veterans. This video will be sent to families. During lunches, a “missing man” table will be on display for our students.

Piney Ridge Elementary School, several veterans from the community have been invited by the PTA to serve as guest speakers on the morning of Veterans Day, November 11th. The veterans will visit classrooms, tell stories about their experiences serving our country, and answer questions from students.

Shiloh Middle School will be putting together a Veterans Day Video Tribute for November 11th to present to students on Veterans Day. The video will include the veteran’s name, photograph, branch of service, any deployments or where he/she was/is stationed, and honors, medals, awards, commendations.

South Carroll High School students composed cards of gratitude to be delivered to veterans at Walter Reed Military Hospital. In addition, an appreciation video compiled of veterans in the community was shared with students and families. Lastly, at the end of the Veterans Day recognition lesson in advisory, the National Honor Society will launch its Soldiers’ Angels Holiday Stockings for Heroes campaign. This service project requires members to collect donations to fill stockings which will be shipped to service members deployed to combat zones or in support of combat operations and veteran patients in VA Hospitals across the country.

Taneytown Elementary School will have a bulletin board featuring a flag made from all of the students’ handprints. Students who have military family members have brought in photos of them and the school is taking photos of the students with their family pictures. A video will be posted online for families to see on November 11th.

Westminster Elementary School will hold several activities for Veterans Day. Veterans will visit and talk to kindergarten and fifth grade students. Second graders will learn why we celebrate the day, read texts, watch short videos, and write about why we are thankful for our veterans. Third graders will watch a Discovery Ed video on the history of Veterans Day, and fourth grade students will be writing letters to veterans to be delivered to the local VA.

Westminster High School is observing Veterans Day with morning announcements and various activities in social studies classes. In addition, students and staff are creating care packages for our troops.

Winfield Elementary School had a flag presentation on October 14th. The presentation was made by veterans and students learned about the flag. A fourth grade class will be presenting to the school on the morning news to share the meaning of Veterans Day. Fifth grade students are attending a presentation on Veterans Day from a local veteran.
